Tempur-pedic Mattresses – Good for your health?
By admin on February 3, 2008

Your bed is the one piece of furniture in your house that directly contributes to your health. There are so many different kinds of mattresses available how do you choose? Mattresses in the marketplace today have either two sides (traditional) or one side. Each has benefits for individual sleepers. Most people think about comfort first while support and durability rank close behind
Firstly, latex and memory foam mattresses in general are fantastic! They are definitely superior to the standard innerspring mattresses for comfort, spine alignment, circulation and pressure distribution. The bottom layer in a foam mattress is either made of latex or a conventional harder foam. This layer is covered with a layer of foam that comes in a few flavors. There is a softer 2inch Isopedic 4lb density foam or the higher quality, denser, 5 lb memory foam (comparable to Tempurpedic). Thicker is not necessarily better. Even a very heavy person only really needs a 6 to 8 inch mattress.
Most people only feel the top four inches. Foundations provide some support, but are really more to add height. The fashion in thicker mattresses is just that…a fashion. They are not better, but are marketed by mattress companies as “more luxurious”.
Thicker density memory foam has also been said to hold the body’s impression for longer. If you roll over you might slip back into the old impression that you just left. Some foam mattress companies will also customize the size of each layer, the firmness of each layer, custom covers, the thickness of each layer and can provide free shipping.
A growing number of consumers are spending more money on luxury mattresses. Comparing the price of a car which is used only a couple hours a day and the price of their mattresses in which they spend 8 hours a day makes them up the ante. Some are spending as much as $20,000 for mattresses made by hand from materials like imported lamb’s wool, cashmere and silk.
Behind the trend, industry experts say, are the aging baby boomers, who have a penchant for luxury products anyway and who often struggle to get a good night’s sleep. Some have become accustomed to high-end beds after staying in luxury hotels, industry experts say.
As you age, you tend to have more aches and pains, and you gain more weight. Higher-quality bedding becomes more important. Manufacturers are saying that people are buying bigger and better bedding.
Statistics from 2002 show that about 17 percent of consumers spent $1,000 to $2,000 on mattress and box-spring sets. This is up from 14 percent in 2001 and 13 percent in 2000. (The average price paid for a mattress in 2002 was $600) Only 3 percent spent more than $2,000 in 2002, up from around 2 percent the previous year. Even those numbers are significant because manufacturers sell an estimated 73,000 mattresses daily in the United States.
Companies began to notice a change in consumer buying habits in 1996, when thicker, pillow-top mattresses started gaining popularity. The market began exploding as baby boomers hit their peak spending years. People are building huge houses with bigger bedrooms, and they are also installing wider staircases, which has made buying bigger mattresses more practical.
Tempur-Pedic is an American mattress and pillow company, based in Lexington, Kentucky, which produces products from the polyurethane based memory foam material, TEMPUR. The company claims, through its television advertisements, that the mattress system has therapeutic properties which relieve the pain some feel while sleeping. The company’s advertising campaign consistently touts its products will offer the feeling of sleeping on, (or sinking into) a cloud.
In the United States, Tempur-Pedic is well known for its infomercials and regular TV commercials which feature actors claiming the material is revolutionary and has changed their lives.
The material used by Tempur-Pedic, called “visco-elastic memory foam,” was originally designed for NASA for use in the U.S. Space Program and then was used by the medical community before becoming a consumer product. Because of the NASA association, the company uses the phrase, “The only mattress recognized by NASA and certified by the Space Foundation” to attribute a uniqueness to its product. Other mattress systems, including Serta, have similar memory foam built into their padding. As a result of this high tech background, Tempur-Pedic mattresses are generally priced substantially higher than that of standard mattresses.

Sleeping On A Cloud
I have always wondered what it would be like if we humans could actually sleep on a cloud. I believe that I now know since I purchased my Tempur-Pedic® Sleep System. Thank you for making such a heavenly sleep possible.

Cradled Like A Teddy Bear
I’ve slept on regular spring/coil mattresses, waterbeds, airbeds, futons and just about any other type of sleep system available. Until I slept on the Tempur-Pedic® mattress, I thought a certain level of pain while sleeping was normal. I know now that is not true. It still amazes me when I wake up and I am in the same position that I was in when I fell asleep! Now that is comfort! The bed cradles me like a big teddy bear. I think the hardest thing for me now is getting up in the morning. The Tempur-Pedic® bed conforms itself to every curve in your body, so that you are not fighting with the mattress! Thank you so much!

Fluffy As A Snowflake
We don’t want to get too far from home because we want to sleep in our Tempur-Pedic® bed. Our 5-year-old granddaughter said lying on the Tempur-Pedic® bed is kind of like lying in the snow, but it’s not cold. We think that sums it up pretty well.

Almost a miracle
The best investment I ever made was to buy a Tempur-Pedic® mattress. Within a few days, ALL of my back pains went away. It was almost a miracle. I love my mattress and will never give it up. For the first time, I am dreading going on vacation because I will not have my mattress with me.

A Piece Of Heaven
I had been in and out of the hospital for three months going through two extensive back surgeries. When I was finally released to come home I settled into my Tempur-Pedic® mattress and it was a piece of heaven. I have not suffered from one “hot spot.” I can lay here without moving for hours, in total comfort, free from pain. My recovery has been dramatic and I believe much of it has to do with this bed. It is a true wonder and worth every penny.

Singing your praises
I was in a car accident about 10 years ago that left me with extreme pain in my neck area. I had never had a truly good night’s sleep since then until now. I absolutely cannot say too much about this product. I have been singing its praises to anyone who will listen. I no longer have pain in my neck. I mean NONE at all. It has also helped with my TMJ and Migraine headaches. I thank God for you all and your product. Bless you!

Simply Wonderful
My husband and I just spent our first night on our new Tempur-Pedic® mattress, and we are thrilled at the terrific night’s rest we both had. My husband said his neck did not hurt when he woke up and he didn’t have the usual aches and stiffness. I just loved the feeling of sinking into that mattress because it felt like a special mold, just for my body. I slept so deeply and woke up so rested, that it was simply wonderful.

What to Look for When Buying a Mattress
COMFORT.
Gone are the days when a mattress had to be hard-as-a-board to be good for you. A too-hard mattress may only succeed in putting your shoulders and hips to sleep. You’ll sleep best when your bed helps you feel cradled in comfort, cozy and secure.Today’s top quality mattress/foundation ensembles are built for superior comfort. Luxurious new cushioning materials and extra-soft surface treatments create a plusher, more comfortable feel.
SUPPORT.
Correct support is the essential ingredient for a healthy body. A good mattress and foundation will gently support your body at all points and keep your spine in the same shape as a person with good standing posture.
Pay special attention to your shoulders, hips, and lower back—the heaviest parts. If there’s too little support, you can develop back pain. But if the mattress is too hard for you, you can experience uncomfortable pressure.
DURABILITY.
It’s the quality of the materials used and how they’re put together that determine how long a mattress and foundation will provide the comfort and support you bought them for. The best assurance of good performance over a good many years is to buy the highest quality sleep set you can afford.
A word about the warranty. Don’t look to the warranty to tell you how long to keep your mattress and foundation. It’s there to protect you against product defects, not against the gradual loss of comfort and support. A sleep set may still be usable after 15 or 20 years, but it’s not giving you the good night’s sleep you deserve.
SPACE.
Cramped quarters can turn sleeping into a nightly wrestling match. A healthy sleeper moves anywhere from 40-60 times a night, including some dozen full body turns.
You need freedom of motion while you sleep and to help you relax while getting to sleep.
If you sleep with a partner, be sure to select queen or king size.
