Welcome! My name’s Ben, and I created this site about Tempur-pedic mattresses.
For several years, I have suffered from Fibromyalgia, a chronic pain condition in which (among many other things), those who have it suffer from disturbed, non-restorative sleep, as well as distinct “tender points” all over the back, shoulders, and other pressure points.
So clearly, a good mattress is of absolute importance - I need a mattress that reduces pressure on all these various touchy bits and that is comfortable in the extreme.
Not only do I spend a lot more time lying in my bed than most people, I spend most of my daytime hours sitting & working on my bed (chairs are very uncomfortable for me). I have a Tempurpedic pillow which I bought 8 years ago, and though it’s pretty beaten down by now, I have found it very helpful when I am suffering from neck & shoulder pain.
What is memory foam?
Astronauts experience a lot of force when they takeoff, and in the 1970s, NASA launched a project to create a material to dampen these forces. Subsequently, memory foam was born.
Unfortunately or not, the first memory foam never did make it into any spacecraft. Instead, the medical industry took over this material to help relieve bed sores since it was so effective at reducing pressure points.
The first generation of memory foam was effective but brittle, and just didn’t stand up well over time. Tempur-pedic has since created a memory foam that was both comfortable and long-lasting. Supposedly.
But in any case, Tempur-pedic has paved the way for several other memory foam mattress companies to launch their own memory foam mattress variant.
